Bringing history to life in the small Coal Mining town of Reefton. Gavin, Peter, and Geoff are 'in residence' all year, and welcome visitors in to learn how a miner lived in the 19th century, when the promise of gold lured thousands of prspectors to the area.
The replica hut depicting 1860s style housing is made of native cedar slabs and set amongst native plantings right in the heart of town on Broadway.
You can sit in front of the fire, enjoy a cup of billy tea, and a griddle scone, watch iron and steel being shaped on the blacksmith forge, or try your hand at gold panning, where flakes of gold are 'guaranteed' to be found.
In fact the pungent smoke that billows from the shack is a highlight for nostalgic Brits.
On one of our many motorcycling trips down the West Coast we always catch up with the Hinton boys.

Sorry I'm late. Fantastic shot and sepia really sets it off perfectly. I'd so love to see this in person and have a cup of tea with them. A great credit to the city for keeping history alive in this fashion.
