Ouch! That's got to hurt. The editor was surely happy with this. . . not the pain. . .the photo.

Indeed... great pic, no doubt. Maybe I'm softie, but I find the scene disturbing...

James Wiley said (4 Mar 2012):

You're not the only ones Nadeem and Sonia. I am an animal lover and also found this treatment of calves questionable. However, it was my job to show rodeo in the most excitng and realistic way possible. I say for me, it is questionable because I don't know if this is cruelty or not. This happens at every rodeo on the circuit and the Calgary Stampede is monitored carefully by members of the SPCA. There are other shots of calf roping on this site, one in spotlight, but they show only the roping of the calf, not the actual moment it is brought to an abrupt halt. In other words, the decisve moment or 'moment of impact'. No doubt there is some pain involved but in every case I've seen, after the calf is roped and tied it is then released and simply walks away. So please believe me when I say I am not insensitve in fact, I am probably too sensitive and did feel exactly what you felt both when I shot this and later viewed it. Pain is a reality in sport!

James, wasn't meant as a criticism of you at all, friend! :) If anything, your incredible capture emphasizes a moment in many of what the calf endures - a moment which may escape us in the process of enjoying the sport - this sport one, and many others. (Did I mention the inclusion of the cowboy in the bokeh is a superb element?). The fact that this provokes such a discussion speaks to the power of your capture. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

James Wiley said (4 Mar 2012):

Thanks Nadeem. I know you were not criticizing me. Actually, this shot was meant to be disturbing. It was meant to show the reality and make you think, which you did and I'm glad you did. I just felt it necessary to reveal that I am not insensitve to the treatment of animals and have always had questions about rodeo. I also think of the other events, especially bronc riding and the use of spurs to make the horse buck. If you view my image 'Wild Rde' these spurs are quite prominent. Is digging these spurs into the side of a horse cruel? I don't know!

James my intention was not to criticize you, I certainly would not have given you a favorite if I that had been my intention. I was just verbalizing my own personal feelings which obviously your capture provoked; you got my attention which is what photography is about. You also have successfully brought to our attention the reality of the sport through your capture and it is only natural that people will have different opinions about the sport and what they see in the sport through your capture. It is an excellent capture and tells the story perfectly, you managed to capture the scene in the most exciting and realistic way my friend and kudos for that! So we have no hard feelings I hope.

  • James Wiley

James Wiley said (4 Mar 2012):

Of course no hard feelings Sonia. Your concerns are also mine when it comes to the treatment of animals (or people) and I wanted it to be clear that I am not insensitive to them. I understand completely your response and am glad you made your feelings heard!

Great captures evoke emotions, and don't nesessarily promote--More important than presenting a good shot is displaying quality character as well. Both of which you have displayed here.

It is a very good capture of a very cruel event. Nothing of ill will meant toward you, but I am certainly against any "sport or competition" which promotes pain for another, animal or human. Sad world we live in at times.
