This redshouldered hawk and her mate live in our neighborhood. They have adapted quite well to suburban living. They have been helping themselves to some of the birds that we and all the neighbors feed; and have become somewhat of a nuisance. This one appears to be afraid of squirrels. One chased her off the electric wires this morning. As she flew into the yard to perch on the crooks that hold our birdfeeders, the birds made a mass exodus to parts unknown. She didn't like me taking her photo, so she left too. She and her mate are really beautiful hawks, but I wish they would hunt somewhere else.

MANY THANKS TO GLORIA FOR NOMINATING THIS PHOTO OF THE WEEK!

You have captured him so well! The thaw in my backyard revealed remainings of a pigeon that was for sure killed by a hawk. I hope it won’t happen like in your neighborhood!

Great capture! These birds are so majestic and beautiful. Unfortunately they are dangerous when you have bird feeders like we do. Just have to do the best you can. Nature takes it course and you don't always agree with the results.

Great shot! How sad that these hawks who are so beautiful like to kill song birds...I am glad the squirrels known to be nuisances too are chasing them off..I was heart sick awhile back to see a hawk grab a chickadee off the branch while it was singing to me...Somehow I felt responsible because it had its attention on me and let down its guard.

Outstanding shot of this beautiful and majestic bird. Wish he and his mate would hunt elsewhere.

Great shot. Indeed- they need to go to the woods.... Mine too. WHen u see many feathers falling from a tree- LOTS of them...u know there is a good reason. sadly.

Magnificent raptor capture :) Bet they discuss how neighborly everyone in the area is to kindly lay out bird-feeders for them ;)

Awesome capture, Judy. Like you, I find such beauty in these Hawks but wish they would hunt away from our yards. We have a Hawk that comes to our yard off and on. I cannot tell if it is a red shouldered or a red tailed Hawk, but I think that I have it narrowed down to either one of these! It's hard to tell from the shot that I got of it.

What a wonderful close-up capture! The red-tailed hawks frequent our area.. once in awhile they take birds that frequent our feeders too, an easy meal I guess, but there are fields full of mice they could go after..
