The flag captured in the iconic photograph of Marines (and a Navy Corpsman) by Joe Rosenthal, raised on 23 Feb 1945 over Mt Suribachi on Iwo Jima. Tough to photograph due to lights and protective glass case, designed to preserve the flag. Not my best, ISO 6400 and polarizer in an effort to capture it.

This is good considering you had to photograph it through a protective glass case.

A very difficult shot but I love it. It is great that they have preserved this historic flag.

Was this the first or second flag raised?

Thad Zajdowicz said (3 Apr 2012):
John, I believe this is the second flag, brought up to the top after the first flag (which was much smaller) had been flown. This is the one in the Rosenthal photo that is so famous.
