Other than an occasional comment about the numerous anatomical renderings at our feet, we didn't talk much. The fact that she was willing to drive 3 hours to a deserted town and closed road was enough for me. I'm not sure what it would have felt like to make the trek alone, but even with her there it was hard the shake the sense of abandonment. There were no signs that said what happened, no warnings or any explanation. And despite the overwhelming vacant feeling that accompanies this place, we're just further proof that people can't and won't stay away.
