Big Bundled Bags
Possible filled with spices from the Orient, or flour shipped to America during the American Revolution-- to make bread for our soldiers. Perhaps bags of cocaine waiting to be shipped to its secret destination, or cursed, sunken treasures found somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle.
Bags of sand left over from the last hurricane----borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring

I rather like your imagination James. Spices from the Orient bound for a Sultans palace. the deep wine tones gave it away.
