I would love to get some feedback on this photo. I wanted to get the details on the moon but was not able to. I would love if someone could tell me what i'm doing wrong. Thank you in advance.

    Hi Carmen,

Okay, first, the best time to take moon shots is right now when the moon is an Orange color. Especially because it's bigger. Try shooting moon shots at f11 with a shutter spead of 125sec. Start there Carmen. If you feel that the moon is still too bright mess around with the manual settings from this biggining.

    Take care,

This was well worth the drive to Swansea (actually, it's the only thing i can think of that would make me want to drive there...)

Beyond that, though, what Vincent says is a great start. You could also try using spot-metering if your camera has it. Aim at the moon in spot mode, half press the button to focus/meter, then compose with your finger still on the button, and shoot.

I love what you have there, Carmen. I'll tell you what I've found: The full moon is amazingly bright through a lens. And the thing moves too! Who knew? :-) I've gotten a few good full moon images. The lens will dictate to some degree the manual settings you'll need to use. I used my Canon 400mm lens on a tripod at f/4.5 and about 1/250sec. It's a fast shutter speed because the a full moon is so bright. Otherwise it's overexposed. I used a 2x extender on that lens essentially making it an 800mm and the shutter speed was down around 1/25 sec. because the extender causes the lens to loose light. Sometimes shooting a moon "less than full" really helps the details to pop. Particularly along the edge of the moon. Also, too slow of a shutter speed and the moon really does move across your frame because of Earth's rotation. Then if you have Photoshop or something like that you can tweek your photos a bit adjusting the light levels and curves and come up with some very cool stuff. Play with it and have fun with it and you'll come up with some amazing stuff. Ps. I love your shots along and around Newport. I miss Flo's Crab Shack! :-) Be well. R

The moon can be tricky to photograph. I love the way this photo turned out because the light under the moon gives the movement that the moon is literally rising through the clouds. I think the photo is GREAT just the way it is.

Love the cloud feel. The moon'll do what it wants. Pushy. You can mollify it with bracketing, Lightroom ( or Aperture ) and I like Sagelight (Windoze only). I find that luck snd perseverance work for me. I live in Florida so the atmosphere has alot to do with the results I get with any full moon.
