Near the Florida Panhandle is a beautiful, peaceful national park; St. Marks National Park. The lighthouse is on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. Built in 1842 by Winslow Lewis, it was the site of several raids by Federal troops during the Civil War. Confederate soldiers posted there were able to thwart the efforts of the Federal troops several times, using the lighthouse as a lookout.
