Beginning of the 100 years of Marine Aviation celebration in Arlington, VA. This sculpture is a 3D depiction of the famous Joe Rosenthal photo taken during the 2nd flag raising atop Mount Suribachi, on Iwo Jima, Japan during WWII. Having spent six weeks on that island, it is and always will be one of the highlights of my Marine Corps career. To date, the battle for Iwo Jima is one of the fiercest battles in Marine Corps history, where in three months more American service members were killed or wounded than in Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom combined. Sadly, over 20,000 of the Japanese Imperial Army lost their lives as well. It is an honor to serve this country and this monument is a reminder to all Marines that freedom comes at a very high price.
Thank you for viewing, and Semper Fi!
