In my 'Photojournalism' collection.

It is common in some countries for people to use their children for sympathy while begging.
Shot in Casablanca, Morocco.

Many thanks to Robert Sand for the Spotlight!

Terrific street shot. Same thing in the US....they call it welfare--the more kids you have, the more $ you get. Sad.

Well seen and captured. Like Susan said, we have that here in the USA also, called welfare. Besides that we see beggars on lots of corners with signs saying that their family is hungry or needs money for medical bills. One man that is on my normal route has a dog that is nursing puppies. He may think that will bring sympathy thus more money for him. I just feel sorry for the dog having to lay outdoors in the heat on a thin blanket on cement.

A very poignant yet beautiful photo James. the emotion in the childs eyes is captured perfectly. I assume by the attire that it is very cold and the other child is mostly wrapped up and protected from the weather. The mans hand is very interesting as he looks like he is holding a coin. His face in shadow adds a darkness to this photo. A GREAT observation on your part and an amazing photo!

What a strong image, It reminds me of last week when i was in Brussels. In the underground a guy with a small baby girl approached us smiling rather creepy clearly using the child to work on the sentiment of people. The child looked almost limp and barely moving. Terrible. Not even sure that was the father or that the child was borrowed. The world can be a sad place.

To say this pic is a strong one is an understatement! Society,at large, in every country, should feel ashamed for let people down like this. No one wants to go to homeless and hungry, we're all our brother's keeper, or we should be! You say they take their children with them for sympathy, and that may be true but still! Anyhow, it's a terrific pic, James!

Terrific comments from both Yaz and Ester. The same thing is happening in all countries, rich and poor. People may use different methods for bits of cash but it's all the same. Photographers, film makers and social activists can do what they can to put a stop to this and those things that are even worse. However, they have been doing it forever and where are we as a society? Thank you both for your thoughtful comments!

A harsh, challenging photo. It poses a number of discomfiting questions. Personally I would suggest that government deregulation and lower US taxes may not be the answer.

A very symbolic scene, his hands are held out of the person who has certainly worked, those eyes of a child that we observe are a tragic indictment.

Its a big racket going on here in India too since a long time. The main reason is poverty. Its really a sad situation and I could well say its a challenge faced by society, government and the people at large to handle the situation. We are aware but not conscious enough to fight for the situation. Thanx James for sharing the photo and making us think.
