In 1992, I was asked by the United Church of Canada to produce a photo essay about street youth for display at a major conference it was hosting. I spent 3 weeks working on the project, mainly at night and the early hours of the morning.
At about 2 am one day I found this young girl wandering aimlessly, looking dressed for school and clutching a sleeping bag. It was so obvious that she did not belong and was very frightened. I quickly found a police cruiser to investigate and she was delivered back to her home that morning.
In my 'Photojournalism' collection.
Many thanks to Max Schenk for the spotlight!
In the Street Youth...Their Story! photo essay.

The whole set is masterful; this is the masterpiece. Poignancy, poverty, defiance, pride, all captured in an image that, although sensitive, pulls no punches.
