Roti (Food), Kapda (Cloth) and Makkan (House)................................................

Bharat (Manoj Kumar) has a degree but remains unemployed for four years. He is the only earning person of family of five people comprising Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), Deepak (Dheeraj Kumar), his father and sister. Bharat is deeply in love with Sheetal (Zeenat Aman) who waits for Bharat to earn and fulfill her dreams. But Bharat is badly bitten by the fate of life. Bharat fails to earn a living. This compels his brother to quit his education. Vijay also chooses an illegal way to earn but Bharat makes him come back on track. Bharat & Zeenat sing for a channel and earn some money. Sheetal suddenly gets the job of a personal secretary of a big businessman, Mohan (Shashi Kapoor). Soon after, Mohan falls in love with Sheetal. Sheetal is infatuated by the richness and agrees to the proposal of marriage. This comes as a shock to Bharat who is already in deep trouble as his father is very ill. He has no money to buy medicines and this leads him to steal from a medicine shop. He is sent to jail but is bailed out by Sheetal. On coming back, he learns that his father is no more. Bharat finally earns the job of a manager in a construction site. He meets a worker, Tulsi, who is attracted to him. But she has a ugly past, and was raped by three men. She also conceived a child. Bharat decides to help Tulsi monetarily. However, soon the construction is brought to a halt due to problems and again Bharat is unemployed. He then decides to join hands with corrupt Nekiram (Madan Puri), a businessman. He does so as his sister is asked to bring a huge amount of dowry. Soon Bharat is doing well and gets a furnished house. Nekiram comes with a plan of grounding all commodities so that the price of ration will rise and his men and himself will earn enormous profits. Bharat goes against him and leaves the group. A shortage of commodities hits the nation. An immediate urgency is imposed in the city of Mumbai. A grain train was to be headed to Mumbai to fetch grains. Nekiram plans to burst the bridge on which the train will pass and create further havoc. But this plan is well stopped by the trio Bharat, Vijay and Deepak. Nekiram gets arrested. However, in the course of action, Sheetal dies. Finally Bharat marries Tulsi.
