We met Vernon while hunting for a subject to photograph through a small 6th & B Garden in NYC. It wasn't long before he became every photographers muse and after obliging us one after one, I finally was able to strike up a conversation with him.
"I've been here 58 years. I am from the Virgin Islands. Things were different back then and a lot has changed, but I come here every day and remember what it was like." His piercing blue eyes recalling his youth as a struggling worker, which his weathered face confirmed.
There were others of his peers but shied away from the clickings of the intrusive black boxes. As we head out, he gave me a tip on his hat, like a perfect gentleman.
