I grew up in the 50s listening to the great Glenn Miller, who was killed over the English Channel in late 1944 in the service of his country. Miller was just the leader of another dance band until he discovered the "Glenn Miller sound" in 1939 with the recording of "Moonlight Serenade." Basically, what he did was feature a lead clarinet, thus presaging Benny Goodman a few years later and Mr. Acker Bilk twenty years later. Listen to this and see if you agree with me that this was a timeless sound, the music of romance. We could use more of that now!
