Security is really tough in downtown Charlotte and I have been chased away 2x's the past yr. in my attempt, to take shots of any of the Bank facades...I had no idea!? With the DNC arrival, I have been told that a camera in tow, is a near impossiblity now.I am resurrecting some older shots.

What a gorgeous shot! Truly stunning.....I've run into your situation, trying to take shots of buildings in an outdoor mall and was told I needed a permit. If you're on a public sidewalk, they can't prevent you from taking a picture.

Wow, that is a lot of gold!!! Excellent photo. I was told by mall security to leave a mall once when shooting a self portrait outside. He said it was private property. I had the photo that I wanted taken already so packed up and left. I see people taking photos in the malls all of the time, guess they just do not get caught.

I once was told to leave the premises of the OUTSIDE of Pier One Imports for photographing the Spring window decorations. What is next? This photo is gorgeous. I love all the geometric elements and the wonderful golden color.

Love this shot, glad you were able to get it and thanks for posting. Anyone can tell you to stop taking photographs, very few actually have the authority to make it 'stick'. Hard to figure out who is who in those situations. Rule of thumb though is anything can be photographed from a public area (malls are private areas in most instances). Or ... take a 'model' with you, pose them just to the side of whatever you really want to photograph, the make it appear you are just photographing the 'model'. Sometimes it works.

I love how it glows. I have been chased out of malls here in Arizona trying to take pics.

Gorgeous - love the arcs, shapes, color - everything! I've been approached by security a couple of times as well, and find that they're just doing what they're told but have no real authority. They never approach anyone with a camera phone, which makes NO sense! Know your rights, tell them NO, and watch them walk away.

Subject: Legal rights of photographers...
Lynn, this might be helpful regarding the rights of photographers to take pictures in public places. I was in IKEA a while back and was taking a photo of a row of empty shopping carts. I was told by an employee to stop because it wasn't allowed. I did stop, but it got me curious about what my legal rights and obligations actually where. Here's link to only one of many resources on the internet.
