[United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland; September, 1964]

I always wanted to play football for Navy, Dad's alma mater, so when I was invited by Navy to attend a football game and spend a weekend at Annapolis, I accepted!

Navy had played in the 1963 National Championship game (against the Texas Longhorns) and, although Navy lost, things were looking up for the “boys from down the crabtown on the bay.”

And, why not? The 1963 Heisman Trophy winner, Roger Staubach (#12), was back for his senior year, and things were looking good. It was a privilege to be recruited by Navy!

I did not know that I would be meeting the team. And little did I know that Roger Staubach would one day guide the NFL Dallas Cowboys to Super Bowl victories in a career that would lead to his induction into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Be sure to check out Navy’s mascot, “Bill,” to the right of the large group shot. He was a very gnarly goat (as the song goes).

And as for college football? It starts THIS WEEKEND!!! The long wait is, at last, over . . .

GO NAVY!!!

As always, thanks for stopping by my page.

The photos look even more incredible in lightbox----especially the goat....it really IS a goat!!!! (I thought you were kidding!!) I remember watching Roger when he played for the Cowboys. I'm not a huge college football fan---unless BSU is playing!!

I really LOVE this collage, Richard!! Wonderful, nostalgic photos of a kinder time in our history. I love your narrative, and "Anchor's Aweigh", which my Dad sang a lot around the house, as he was a WWII Navy vet who served in the South Pacific aboard the Destroyer, the USS Beale, DD471. So much to remember and love about this great photo!! And YES, football is starting up again this weekend......GO BUCKS!!!! :))

Dick, we both love your shots. Even though we were there much later (1982 - 85) it brings back great memories. We also really enjoyed " Anchors Aweigh." I can remember my dad singing that years ago. Wayne says thanks for the dedication!

Even I am familiar with Roger Staubach, Richard.. I remember watching US football on Saturday or Sunday afternoons as a girl, so envious that they could play football in the middle of our winter. Bill, the mascot, sounds like a real charmer, too, lol. I have always thought football was a great game and continue to enjoy the CFL and occasional US games, too. A terrific collage and narrative!!

GO NAVY! What a grand collage, and you are easily recognizable in that shot. While not quite old enough to have been in WWII, the sights in that film brought back a bunch of memories - some things in the Navy never change. Excellent rendition of the song, sounds familiar. ;-) '64, half-way through my second enlistment, on a ship in Japan and kid nr 3 arrived February in San Diego, CA. Thanks for bringing back some memories.
