I always wanted to play football for Navy, Dad's alma mater, so when I was invited by Navy to attend a football game and spend a weekend at Annapolis, I accepted!
Navy had played in the 1963 National Championship game (against the Texas Longhorns) and, although Navy lost, things were looking up for the “boys from down the crabtown on the bay.”
And, why not? The 1963 Heisman Trophy winner, Roger Staubach (#12), was back for his senior year, and things were looking good. It was a privilege to be recruited by Navy!
I did not know that I would be meeting the team. And little did I know that Roger Staubach would one day guide the NFL Dallas Cowboys to Super Bowl victories in a career that would lead to his induction into the NFL Hall of Fame.
Be sure to check out Navy’s mascot, “Bill,” to the right of the large group shot. He was a very gnarly goat (as the song goes).
And as for college football? It starts THIS WEEKEND!!! The long wait is, at last, over . . .
As always, thanks for stopping by my page.
