Joichi Hoshi (block print artist, 1911 - 1979 was born in Niigata prefecture and educated in Taiwan, Joichi Hoshi returned to Japan after World War II where he studied oil painting. He has been exhibited at the Sao Paulo and Tokyo Print Biennials. Strongly attracted to elements of nature, the artist's earlier prints depict stars and constellations, but by the 1970's, he focused on the subject of trees on gold leaf- the image for which he is best known. My current series is creating 'Hoshis" using my tree images layered on look-a-like gold leaf backgrounds.
