Q: My sister in-law recently gave me a Canon EOS 10D digital camera body. Having only used point and shoot cameras, what would be a good beginners lens to get for this camera? Should I get kit lens to start with?

A: Do you know?

Behold I stand at the door and knock...Revelations 3: 20

This is a scanned print that I shot of John and Bob in July 1997 with my NIkon FE2 film camera.

They called themselves the "City Slickers" and they were from my home town where I grew up..
Bob on the right with the blue guitar graduated from high school with me in 1961 and have known him since grade school. My late mother used to give him piano lessons for a short while when he was around 10 years old.

They asked me to shoot a series of pictures of them for their promotional flyer that summer. I was nervous as I had never done that kind of a shoot before ...I wish I could say that all the pictures that evening turned out super but contended with blobs of contrasty lighting by trees, etc. and I remember it was steaming hot outside...

The last picture I shot of them by the green door in the shade has always been my favorite of the whole works because not only did the lighting cooperate, but by this time we were all more relaxed since the photo shoot was ending and I got some natural spontaneous smiles from them:)

John and Bob are no longer performing musically together. John moved to another state shortly after I shot this picture... but they used to sing and play their guitars for many events, plus street dances on the 4th of July. The old wooden building on this image is no longer there either but was torn down later.... We got permission from the owner at that time to use it for the background on this photo shoot.

Update: I was delighted to learn that there was a popular song in 1956 entitled
"The Green Door" that I had never heard of and here is a link to read the lyrics:

Dennis the green door was used for a photo prop background and that was it..the owner of that work shed who died from a stroke used to make wooden crafts that he would sell for people to paint their designs on in that shed...He and his wife bought their house and property which was on the other side of the shed from my parents in 1951...The house my folk's bought for us to move into burned to the ground 6 weeks after we moved and my youngest 5 year old brother died from the results of his burns and smoke inhalation..

I wanted to add that Bob's wife who is an artist did a beautiful job of making the flyer out of
one of the pictures that I shot from doing that photo shoot in 1997...They didn't choose this
picture but there was another one that they liked where they were posed next to a swing
with their guitars....I had also shot some of them standing next to an old barn..My sister who
was visiting us from Colorado at that time came with me and got to see what it was like to do some photo shoots around our home town..
