Q: Choosing a Pentax prime lens

A: Do you know?

I’m having reverse culture shock, but in a good way. There’s a place I want to check out. And Sam has special access down the needed road because of the wildfire. The firefighters wave us by.

His four-door Wrangler looks how it’s supposed to look: dirty on the outside, dirty on the inside. Sam says he’s lived off gravel roads 80 percent of his life. He says he could take you deep into the wilderness for days without ever hitting pavement. This man’s toys are abundant—horses, four-wheelers, snowmobiles, mountain bikes. The dirt roads are rutted and weathered. He explains the forest service work I’m overlooking. I think I could do that work.

They call this place “poverty with a view.” We come here to play and work second. You find work to afford your recreational lifestyle. Wages are low but there is no end to play—climbing, paddling, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding. It’s paradise for someone on the fringe of trends and designer clothes. It’s perfection.
