This fellow has green eyes, though you can't see them at this angle. The Spanish Needles are full of them and a healthy population of nectaring butterflies, other bees and wasps and day flying moths, most of them micromoths.
My fascination with the big boy bumbles is that they get SO tired feeding on nectar, they often hang on and sleep where they are. Like this one. I took this in the evening in a patch of sun - and if you come out with a flashlight in the dark, you can catch them sleeping under their flowers.
