The "cerrado" is a vast tropical and subtropical biome covering more than 20 percent of Brazil, it includes a number of ecosystems from tall closed forests to marshlands to open grassland. The largest savannah in South America is home to a surprising level of biodiversity, in fact some experts have stated that it is the most biologically rich savannah in the world.

A peculiarity of the savanna landscape are the enormous termite mounds of 2 meters height. During the humid-warm summer nights, between October and November, the termite mounds shimmer in a blue-green phosphorescing light between the dark grass, produced by millions of termite larvae.
