Nightwish is music for the soul. So how does one capture the people behind it, and do them justice?
'Dark Passion Gallery' (published 2008) is a book of many emotions. From the excited frenzy of a live performance to the loneliness and frustration that can come with life on the road. Juurikkala
followed the band around the world during their intense touring schedule of 2008, capturing the band during some of their most personal moments as well as on stage.
Juurikkala's technique made me question the way in which I look at photography. From a technical point of view, many of his images may divide opinion. While some are crisp, clear and vivid others are extremely dark and filled with "noise"/grain. Some could argue that this ruins the images, while others may see them as having a dreamlike quality. It certainly raises questions as to what exactly constitutes a great capture.
One thing is for certain: 'Dark Passion Gallery' does succeed in capturing a very real, very emotional side to life on the road. The band is laid bare, not in words or sound, but in photography.
