© mylatehope.comWicked creepy photo from deep inside the dark, abandoned army bunkers at Ft. Wetherill in Jamestown, RI. These bunkers were built to defend the United States against a possible Nazi invasion during World War II. Today it may seem to be a far-fetched idea, but a German U-Boat did sink a few ships off the Rhode Island shore and America had to prepare for all possiblities. (The Alaska Highway was built to defend the North from Japan at the same time.)

The bunkers are dark, and littered with candles and occult paraphernalia. Nicole and I went in armed only with our flashlights and our cameras. It was the day after Halloween, so we half-expected to find revelers sleeping off the previous night's partying. Alas, only our imaginations spooked us as much as the graffiti and candles.

Created using my Holga 120CFN with Fuji NPZ 800 film in complete darkness with the white flash. Negative scanned with my Epson v700 Perfection scanner. No digital manipulation used!

Very powerful shot - the slight diffused softness of the Holga works great

Jodie, i had posted 4 b&w's in a row, so i figured i needed a color photo next & i shot this the same day as the Enchanted Forest ones. as far as my photo explainations, i fancy myself to be a better writer than photographer!
Alexis, i do love that soft focus look! i try to match my subject with my camera. if i want a sharp focus image, i use the Clack. for softer looking shots i use my holga or diana+. since i was in complete darkness i had to use the holga & its flash.
Charles, i took photos of much of the graffiti and it mostly was of this theme. i guess its because its a dark (and supposedly haunted) place that this is what is painted in here. there wasnt any of the cool abstract painting that you shoot :-(

Funny how the bunkers inspire artwork so closely attuned to original reasons for building bunkers in the first place! Or are there drawings of flowers and smiling elephants outside the frame? The Holga and the flash and the bunkers themselves have all combined to manipulate our own sense of comfort -- spooked by our own imaginations, as you exactly write. Not sure I've seen a "spookier" image on this website. Excellent job.
