In L'Arche, people who have developmental disabilities and those who come to assist share life and daytime activities together in family-like settings that are integrated into local neighbourhoods.

This photo essay was done in the 1970's for The Winnipeg Tribune. L'Arche has grown immensely since then.

    That's a wonderfully moving picture, James. My mother was "disabled" by polio, so I grew up seeing how unfair the world was to her. Then, one of the most rewarding parts in my acting career was in David Freeman's brilliant caustic play "Creeps" playing the part of a man with cerebral palsy.
