Q: Why are some of the contest photos obviously photoshopped?

As far as I can tell this is a rope and pulley system used for hoisting heavy loads overhead.
I think they're called a rope brake.
The bar in the slot slides forward into a pulley to keep it from rolling and acting as a brake.

I found this treasure in an old barn in Espyville Pa.
