This is a Drake Red-Breasted Merganser, a diving duck, with a very cool serrated bill.

When the winter approaches and through March (sometimes later) these birds can be found all over coastal Maine.

The Common Merganser prefers fresh water in thewinter (where it can be found) and the Red-Breasted prefers brackish and salt water.

The Hens are harder to distinguish, so knowing that tidbit really helps.
