The coming of the new year is one of the biggest celebrations throughout Japan. In Okinawa, one of Japan's southernmost islands, the celebration takes many forms. At Peace Prayer Memorial Park, an area dedicated to all that was lost in the Battle of Okinawa during WWII, a flame burns brightly for peace and just behind it shooting up into the sky is a beacon of light.
