Emerging from the swirl of coal smoke, snow, and winter mists, this Preßnitztalbahn Zugführer (train conductor) cuts an imposing figure in his traditional uniform, complete with red sash and gold epaulets. He is supervising a shunting operation on the narrow-gauge Pressnitztalbahn steam railway in the Erzgebirge region of Eastern Germany. Shortly, his train, pulled by a lovingly maintained steam locomotive, will depart Steinbach for Jöhstadt.
From an Ektachrome original.
