My gosh where did the years go and how did they ever pass so quickly ??
This photo was taken in the winter of 1980 and I remember every detail about it.
I was 23 years old and my daughter Marie had been born in August.
She was just a little shy of 6 months old.
I was working the afternoon/evening shift as a mechanic/pump jockey at the Sohio station just up the road from where we lived.
Back then self serve gas stations were something new so most stations still pumped your gas for you.
At the time there was only 1 self serve station in town and being the dead of winter most folks were reluctant to pump their own gas so I was always busy at night.
Between fixing flat tires, doing oil changes, antifreeze flush and fills and running in and out to pump gas my nights went by pretty fast.
And that was perfect for me because all I gave a damn about was getting home to spend time with my little girl.
I always told Diane to make sure the baby had an early evening nap so she would be up when I came home from work.
These were the absolute best years of my life and being a father was by far the best experience I've ever had.
I've never been able to understand how a man could just bail out on his kids and walk out of their life.
Without a doubt I'd relive those years in a hot second if it were possible !!
