Initially submitted in April, I am re-submitting this image as part of my 'Hockey' series.

Taken for Canadian/Associated Press and one of my personal favourites, this image received a Canadian Press Award as well as both regional and national awards from the National Press Photographers Association.

This is what I would call the rough side of hockey, perfectly executed. A nice clean, solid and legal hipcheck. Not a shot to the head, not a wildly swinging stick... This is the ART of hockey!

In my 'Sports and Action' collection.

In the NHL: Game On! photo essay.

I remember this post. The lack of enthusiasm from the crowd caught my eye. All the guys look bored and the one women looks as though she is biting her nails and a bit worried. With all the action going on in the rink, can't imagine just sitting there so calm. This is a great action shot and nice addition to your series!

Yes Donna, I remember your comment from before. I have thought about it and think the lack of emotion on the men's faces could be due the the fact that is the home town boy taking this brutal check. If it was the other way around, you would probably be looking at a totally different scenario. These guys are season ticket holders and see everything up close. They are home town fans and I think react accordingly!

As Henri Cartier-Bresson coined it, this was the decisive moment. Outstanding capture.

Awesome catch! Yes, this is hockey. You may also explain the lack of reaction on the faces of the fans as actions like this happen so quickly, the fans may have already reacted to the initial impact of the hip check or are about to.....another reason why you've captured this at just the right moment!

Love what Susan G. wrote, a 'decisive moment 'and masterful work, brutal hit and you do have to wonder, about the lack of emotion on the fan's faces!!

Amazing shot! Your timing is so impeccable. The faces of the crowd in the background really adds dimension to it. I was glad to see the comments above...I was going to make a comment similar to Donna's.

What a superb capture of an effective defensive move. Very deserving of those awards! I remember from my days as a die hard Black Hawk fan how upset I got over the `other` team pulling these moves, but as you stated, when the tables were turned it wasn`t such a big deal :). Ah, hockey.

An unforgettable action shot, James. Thanks for your take on the crowds reaction. The contrast between them and the players adds a whole other layer to this winning shot.
