This photograph has five planes: The foreground with the building and car. the wall and arch, the domed church, the rear building and the distant hills. Space appears compacted (the various planes close together), because I used a relatively long focal length (135mm). Long focal length compact space; short focal lengths expand space making planes appear farther apart. I tell my students that by understanding this you can use your zoom lens creatively to expand or compact space, instead of using it as a convenience only.
