The yellow mongoose is a small mammal. Averaging about and 0.5 kg in weights and 500 mm in length it is smaller than other mongoose species. It can be found in southern parts of the African continent, namely Namibia, Botswana, Angola, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It prefers open habitats such as grasslands and scrubs where it lives in large colonies of up to 20. However, the yellow mongoose is also very common in urban areas.
It is mostly active during the day. It primarily eats insects but occasionally mice, birds, reptiles, eggs etc. The yellow mongoose can live up to 13 years in captivity. Male and female yellow mongoose do not differ in size.
