Ceiling Detail at
St. Patrick Cathedral

What is JHS in Catholic Church means?
In: Catholicism

Roman Catholic Answer
It is IHS, not JHS, there is no "J" in Latin. IHS stands for Iesus (Jesus) Hominum Salvator, roughly meaning Jesus Savior of Men. In reality it is a faulty Latin transliteration of the first three letters of Jesus in Greek (IHS for IHC).
from Modern Catholic Dictionary by John A. Hardon, S.J. Doubleday & Co., Inc. Garden City, NY 1980
