Sangeeth and me rode to the temple on that auspicious night.

The temple, in the tropical Kerala open field surrounded by the coconut palms was all lined up with little Deepaks (oil lamps), hanging on long strings from around the roof.

After boys and girls gave their school books to be blessed by the Hindu priests, we went to see the Muthappan.

'See' means not just to look at, but as someone would see a doctor or a psychologist. The Muthapan tells you something about the future while holding your hand.

Women waited in a line running by his side and men from the other.

I was a bit irritated by what I'm going to hear but now that I try to remember I can only recall his soft hand holding me and his calm words, which Sangeeth translated and their lost from my memory.
