Pound Road, Westerly, RI

We were driving back home in the early afternoon on Memorial Day when we noticed a car overturned by the side of the road just as we turned off of Route 91 onto Pound Road. There is a dangerous curve there. A couple of motorists had already stopped and there was a woman standing next to the car screaming gut wrenching screams. One of the motorists was looking inside the wrecked car.

As I got out of our car the police showed up. I was looking around and noticed a young boy standing by the side of the road (behind where the police van is in my photo). He looked about 5 years old and I wondered where his parents were.

I walked over and just as I arrived at where he was standing he asked me if I could help his father. I asked where he was and the boy said he was still in his car and pointed over to the ditch in the woods. It was then that I noticed the skid marks and heard the engine running. The car was a mess so I took the boy away from it, handed him over to one of the police officers and told her there was a second car.

A few days later the State Police and Town Police showed up to take measurements. And a few weeks after that we read in the paper that the boy’s father had died in the crash with a blood alcohol level 3 times the legal limit. The husband of the screaming woman had also died. Later, family members put up crosses at the scenes of the two deaths. They are still there.

I this day I have no idea how that boy got out of that car and walked over to the road. The car looked like a total wreck.

Ouch! I know that corner well (fortunately) as it's on my "back way" home. Not a great corner even when sober if you aren't ready for it.

Excellent photo! My son and I both have noticed an increase in the number of people driving across the center line. I think it is mostly caused by drivers not paying attention to their driving, talking or texting on cell phones, and other distractions inside their vehicles. Driving is a job that requires the drivers full attention while the vehicle is moving and sometimes even when stopped.

John, this is so heart wrenching!! Glad that you were able to help the little boy, what a traumatic time for him with the accident and needless death of his father. I wonder if the little boy was thrown from the car?
