We're running the most dangerous experiment in history right now, which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere can handle before there is an environmental catastrophe ~ Elon Musk

I have many images of smokestacks. There is some fascination there that I can't define. Perhaps it is the visible carbon footprint that I am witness to.

In the Conduct Unbecoming photo essay.

Nature has a way to turn that carbon dioxide into oxygen but we keep cutting them down in huge numbers.

From everything I've read, it's already too late, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. A powerful photo, Bailey. Maybe you should send it to the power companies and the powers that be! It would make a GREAT poster.

You're right Fred. Human activities (like the combustion of fossil fuels and deforestation) have caused the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide to increase by about 35% since the beginning of the age of industrialization. The end point of the carbon cycle is oxygen (the terminal electron receptor in the production of ATP). No oxygen, no energy, cell death. I bet that's painful.

  • Scott Emery

I like this image and the message very much. The color tones are marvelous, but the focus is clear and appropriately on what is coming out of that stack. The smokestack has no veil, its meaning and substance cannot be "denied". The public's lack of attention to this experiment in catastrophe is an appalling indicator of significant evolutionary weakness on the part of the species. Is self-destruction the price of consciousness?
