Here lies the President Melchior Ndadaye and his close associates were killed on the night of 21/10/1993. Melchior Ndadaye is the first democratically elected President of Burundi. After his inauguration, he chose to live in this palace and unfortunately he was killed three months later and chose to bury him here. Since then, the site is called: THE PALACE OF MARTYRS. Also based in this location, the President Cyprien Ntaryamira, who succeeded Melchior NDADAYE murdered in turn Kigali accompanied by some of his ministers and the President of Rwanda Juvenal Habyarimana was April 6, 1994.
