One of the main objectives of the political activism of Samantha Flores, who completed her “transition” in the early 1960’s, has been to seek care for the elder in an inclusive LGBT community and just society in Mexico City. She has also been the driving force behind the project to create a nursing home for LGBT people with AIDS where they can age with dignity and respect. The life of Samantha, whose name was inspired in a film character, exemplifies the history of contemporary transsexuality in Mexico. It is an example of the struggle for self-identity in a hostile and macho society. When she was still Vicente, she dreamt of being a concert performer and ballet dancer, but the paternal authority did not allow her to follow her dreams. However, from then on she would write the story of her own life, defying conventionalisms and the transphobic police repression of her times and today fighting for causes such the dignification of the transsexual elderly. Her story is still to become a wonderful autobiographical book.
