From the series Beyond Gender.
After suffering through a particularly difficult childhood and youth in which she tried to understand “this situation of mine that came with the chip”, only ten years ago Zalma Ahedo began to assimilate that this “not knowing why I was what I was” was called gender dysphoria. She informed herself, went to therapy, and today, is following temporary hormonal treatment, reaffirming her heterosexual preference and has stubbornly gotten the support of her parents, her son who is a college student, her couple, family and brothers, making them understand that she is only trying “to be herself, because I am transgender, hetero, not by choice, but by birth, like an left-handed person in life…something that has been difficult for them to accept, but even more so for me.” In her earlier life Zalma was a pilot with a long career in commercial flying. Today she is dedicated to professional model airplane making.
