From the series Beyond Gender.
“I am a beautiful, very feminine woman, a lovely human being that should have emerged long ago…” During the making of this photographic project, self-defined Tannya Alizée Martín del Campo had sold her computer and used up all her savings in order to obtain her reassigned birth certificate and continue with her profession as an actress. This might be the decisive moment of her life, after a long and painful struggle to be accepted by her family as she has chosen to be. Born in Aguascalientes, a State in the center of Mexico, at 19 she left for Mexico City to study in one of the most important acting schools, which was a fundamental step in reaffirming her transsexual condition. But as she was opening this door, her family and social environment were closing others for her. This is why, apart from solving her individual legal condition, Tannya Alizée decided to fight for the necessary legal modifications to take place in her state so that transgender women like her have the right to change their identity if they want to do so, and to tell their families, as she has: “I haven’t changed, my essence is the same, only the exterior changed. See me as a human being, as I am, as we all are.”
