In the sleepy pueblito of Las Tinas, Baja, Mexico, Rocendo Sandez has been making rope from palm leaves his entire life. The rather simple process involves hanging the new palm leaf sprouts to dry. He then rubs the strands between his calloused hands until they are intertwined. The resulting rope is used in the construction of palapa roofs, also made by hand. He hopes to teach his granddaughter the craft, as has been done for centuries.
