For as long as I can remember, I've been the go-to girl for costumes. When I was 12 and my brother was 8, I ripped up a sheet and turned him into a mummy. The Town Show always had an annual Halloween costume contest. He took 1st that year and won 5, count 'em, 5 silver dollars. It was over about 8 pm and we trick-or-treated on the way home and got mugged by some bullies who stole our bags of candy. Tommy's loot was in his bag. I'm pretty sure you could've heard us wailing a mile away.

Fast forward many years and costumes remained my favorite thing to sew. My kids also won many costume contests as did my grandkids.

My daughter, Amy, and the kids relocated to Denver in 2008 and we were there for Halloween 2009. I was curious about what they'd come up with for costumes with grandma 1300 miles away. I walked in the house, and this is what Matt was wearing. Matt's chef dad came up with this, complete with 'tall hat' and cleaver. I was humbled.

The sun was streaming through the dining room window and I thought, oooooo... shadows.

PS Would some one mind straightening that picture on the wall. It's driving me nuts.

  • Aaron Schwartz

Well, it certainly fits the theme, but I would have expected nothing less. It is wonderfully and accurately the colour of dried blood, which I take as a bonus. I will now move to the more important culinary question of what to do with that particular cut of meat. I'd suggest first removing the chains that someone has tastelessly attached. Then ... well, I won't bore you with the whole recipe here, but it involves slow cooking and braising. You are a dangerous person, Bailey Cooper. Just sayin' .
