In Homosassa, Florida, there this man-made lake, Lewis Lake on the local maps. It was created when workers mined limestone for the local road bases in the '20's. It glistens like the crown jewel of a twenty five acre refuge constantly drawing family and friends. We swim in it often and exlore its murky depths. In the middle you can feel chill waters seeping in from the aquifer. My dad keeps it well-stocked and balanced with bass and bluegill the size of a ranchers' hands. Just last week, he was excited because he had incited an algae bloom. "It provides good cover for the fry." he explains. The last time i caught Miss Piggy, she was 26" long. We call her that because she eats pretty much anything! Her favorite is chicken wings. That was two years ago and she's grown since then; we often see her and two other monster bass swimming around our feet. This is not one of our kept ducks. It's probably a wood duck which invaded the swans' territory. From here you can hike out the back of the property into the vast Wihlacoochee State Forest and then the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge. All around are turkeys, deer, pigs, 'coons, armadillos, 'possums, snakes , insects, etc. It's a wondrous place to live. Having grown up in Big Sky Country with huge mountains and rolling plains all around, Florida feels to me like being a bug lost in a thick, green, shag carpet. Swimming with alligators is easy. Like bears, you just follow a few basic rules and they'll never bother you. Like sharks, the proportionally negligible incidence of human attack is way overblown!
