Xintiandi was formerly a neighbourhood for workers in Shanghai.
It has now been completely gentrified.
However, if gentrification has to happen (has anyone learned to stop it?) this is the way to do it.
The original buildings were not torn down. Instead their interiors were revamped and the outer shells were left alone. This allows Xintiandi to avoid seeming sterile or overly crass.
