So, a few years ago, I had the chance to catch a ride in the cab of a Niles Canyon Railway steam locomotive on a shakedown run after a several month refurbishment. Of course I jumped at it. It was a first for me. Hot, smelly, smoky; I was having the time of my life. But I was a little surprised at how young the engineer was. After a run from the Brightside maintenance yard to Niles, they asked if anybody was interested in riding in the cab back to Brightside. Duh! I was the first one there.
