This is a kind of stromatolite formation formed as a result of bacterial action. Erosion was washing iron compounds into the oceans, and oxygen released by photosynthetic organisms was converting the iron compounds into insoluble iron oxides that were precipitated. Once all the iron compounds had been oxidized the oxygen was then released into the atmosphere, paving the way for organisms the could depend on aerobic respiration.
