Timelapse video: https://vimeo.com/181706906.

The milky way passes over Yosemite's Half Dome as a friend hikes up the cables. Kurt Lawson and I backpacked five camera setups to Mt. Watkins, a rock outcropping across Yosemite Valley from Half Dome, where we used them for still photos and timelapse video.

My original inspiration for this was a poorly-Photoshopped night image of Half Dome from Olmstead Point, which is a lookout several miles away on Tioga Road. Half Dome had been shot at ~200mm, and a ~35mm Milky Way (taken another day in another location?) had been pasted into the sky. It caught my attention, but I wanted to do it better, and for real. So I organized a trip, found a better angle, and recruited Wade Meade to hike up Half Dome wearing a bunch of headlamps to create a light trail. The Milky Way was a 15-second exposure, and the light trail was created over 40 minutes. The lens was a Rokinon 50mm f/1.4, and there was no recomposing or re-positioning of the camera. The milky way really did pass in this exact position as Wade was climbing up Half Dome.
