Beaver Island sits about three hours by ferry from the mainland of Michigan. Only place in the United States that had a king. The story goes something like this; A small group of Mormons broke off from the main congregation of the church. Brigham Young and his followers were traveling west to what would become Utah. A Mr. Strand declared himself the leader of this tiny troop of revolting disciples, when he landed on the island, he anointed himself "King Strand" and changed the name of their religion. When the Michigan natives heard of his declaration they jumped into their canoes and paddled 6 hours to St. James. (the only village on the island) These angry Michiganders took King Strand to the end of a dock and hung him! My wife, daughter, and I rented a cabin there in the early 80's. I spotted this beautiful ship leaving the island early one morning. It just added to the sense of history on this wonderful island.
