It’s been raining. Every day. Days melt into weeks. Weatherbug says sunshine; I look across the swamp and say “Rain”. I’m always right.

So when Mickey, my old Boston, carried his octopus out one wet morning and left it behind, I thought he’d remember it and bring it in, but he didn’t. The Tiger Swallowtail you see here found it and was sucking moisture from its spongy body. It stayed there for the longest time.

The colors of the scales are so vivid, I suspect it is “fresh”, newly emerged from somewhere in our oak trees. When they are this pristine and beautiful, it’s on its maiden journey.

The chickens didn’t find it because I didn’t let them out until it was gone.
