Candid photography at a Junior Chess Tournament, Herndon, Virginia. This particular shot is a perfect example of one of my favorite photographic techniques: using a single focal point and composing the picture with the shutter release half-cocked. I can feel the lens moving as it searches for sharpness and I know my gear enough to trust it, but meanwhile, my eye is scanning the rest of the viewing screen searching for fine detail - such as texture on the face of a rugged man, 'peach fuzz' on a young girl or the individual blowing hairs on the boy's hair. When I see these little things, I fire the shutter. Part of the battle is knowing and trusting your gear; the other part is 'looking' for the details before shooting. Fifty years ago, when I first became a news photographer, we learned to 'look' through our sharp. fast-glass lenses for these details. We referred to our favorite glass as our Zit-Shooters.
